Study for the Periodic Pedestrianization of Athinas Street

The project involved the preparation of a study for the implementation of the periodic pedestrianization of Athinas Street, one of the most important axes of Athens’ historic center. The main objectives were to promote sustainable mobility, improve pedestrian safety, and enhance the urban experience in the areas of Monastiraki and the Commercial Triangle.

The intervention αφορά the restriction of vehicular traffic every Saturday from 20:00 until Sunday at 20:00, allowing for the creation of a more welcoming, organized, and functional public space.

Main actions include:

  • Assessment of existing conditions in terms of traffic operations, pedestrian flows, land uses, and public transport services.
  • Collection of traffic data, including turning movements, traffic volumes, hourly variations, and pedestrian counts.
  • Analysis of critical junctions along Athinas Street and surrounding streets (Ermou, Agias Irinis, Sarri, Sofokleous, among others).
  • Assessment of impacts on public transport, including bus routes operating along the corridor.
  • Development of proposed traffic regulations, alternative vehicle routes, and revised routes for OASA bus services and tourist coaches.
  • Proposals for vertical and horizontal signage, as well as enforcement measures during the pedestrianization period.

The central objective of the project was to create a safe, pleasant, and culturally enhanced historic city center, strengthening pedestrian mobility, local economic activity, and overall accessibility.
