The project focused on the assessment of existing pedestrian crossings and the design of targeted interventions to improve pedestrian crossing infrastructure throughout the Municipality of Spata–Artemida. The study aimed to enhance road safety and promote safe pedestrian mobility, with particular emphasis on locations experiencing high traffic volumes and significant pedestrian activity, including schools, sports facilities, public squares, public service buildings, and healthcare facilities, where the protection of vulnerable road users is of critical importance.
As part of the study, detailed field inspections and assessments of the existing road infrastructure were carried out, focusing on the condition of pedestrian crossings, horizontal and vertical traffic signage, visibility, and pedestrian accessibility. Based on the findings, targeted improvement measures were developed in accordance with the applicable technical standards and the Greek Road Design Guidelines (OMOE). The proposed interventions aimed to create a safer and more accessible urban environment by upgrading pedestrian crossings and implementing measures that enhance road safety, facilitate everyday mobility, and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors within the study areas.
Main actions included:
- Field surveys and assessment of the existing condition of pedestrian crossings at selected locations throughout the municipality.
- Evaluation of horizontal and vertical traffic signage, visibility conditions, and pedestrian accessibility.
- Assessment of the geometric and operational characteristics of roadways and pedestrian crossing facilities.
- Design of upgraded pedestrian crossings and traffic management measures in accordance with applicable engineering standards and the Road Design Guidelines (OMOE).
- Development of recommendations to improve traffic signage, enhance visibility, and mitigate factors affecting the safe movement of pedestrians.
