ScienTra’s Participation in Local Urban Plans

ScienTra actively participates in the preparation of five Local Urban Plans (LUPs) across Greece, within the framework of the “Konstantinos Doxiadis” program of the Ministry of Environment and Energy. Currently, 227 Local Urban Plans are under development, covering 730 Municipal Units—representing a significant step toward a more sustainable and well-structured spatial planning framework for the country.

What are Local Urban Plans and why are they important?

Local Urban Plans are comprehensive planning tools that define how each area will develop spatially, socially, and environmentally over the coming decades.

Specifically, they:

  • Address complex spatial planning issues that have long concerned residents and local stakeholders.
  • Promote long-term spatial and urban planning directions, regulations, and rules to support balanced development.
  • Identify opportunities, weaknesses, and threats—what can be improved, what should be avoided, and what needs to change.
  • Protect the natural environment, highlight cultural heritage, and strengthen resilience to climate-related and natural challenges.

Within the framework of the Local Urban Plans, ScienTra contributes its technical and scientific expertise in the fields of transportation, traffic organization, and sustainable mobility.

We work toward the development of integrated proposals that improve the functionality of road and transport networks, enhance safety, and facilitate the connection between people and places in a sustainable and efficient manner.

Our proposals are guided by the principles of sustainable mobility and road safety, contributing to the creation of modern, resilient, and well-connected communities. Through our involvement, the objectives of spatial planning are translated into practical and sustainable interventions that enhance connectivity and the overall functionality of local communities.
