Traffic Study for the Aesthetic, Functional, and Environmental Regeneration of the Agios Dimitrios Town Centre

The project involved the preparation of a comprehensive traffic study as part of the aesthetic, functional, and environmental regeneration of the Agios Dimitrios town centre. The study focused on evaluating existing traffic conditions, identifying key operational issues within the road network, and investigating interventions aimed at improving road safety, accessibility, and the overall functionality of the public realm.

As part of the study, extensive traffic surveys and analyses were conducted, including the operational assessment of major intersections and the public transport network. Alternative pedestrianization and traffic management scenarios were evaluated, leading to the development of an integrated traffic management strategy incorporating parking regulations, traffic circulation improvements, and upgraded traffic signage. The proposed interventions were designed to create a safer, more functional, and pedestrian-friendly urban centre while promoting sustainable mobility, enhancing the urban environment, and improving the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

  • Assessment of existing traffic conditions and the operational characteristics of the urban road network.
  • Traffic surveys, traffic volume analysis, and turning movement counts at critical intersections.
  • Evaluation of the public transport network and its integration with the municipality’s mobility system.
  • Development and comparative assessment of alternative pedestrianization and traffic management scenarios.
  • Design of a new traffic management scheme, including traffic redistribution, parking regulations, parking restrictions, retractable bollards, and upgraded horizontal and vertical traffic signage.
  • Assessment of the impacts of the proposed interventions on road network performance and sustainable urban mobility.
